Choosing Quality Child Care Takes Time & Thoughtful Consideration: Formal (Licensed) Child Care program may include a Day Care Centre, a Nursery or Preschool, school-age programs or home child care. These programs are regulated under the Day Nurseries Act which is enforced by the Ministry of Community and Social Services. The children are supervised by qualified early Childhood educators who are certified in First Aid & CPR and are carefully screened and monitored. Licensed child care provides age appropriate activities and programs including indoor and outdoor play geared towards healthy development of children. Informal (Unlicensed) Child Care programs are not regulated through a licensed agency and are not inspected or supervised. These services are provided in the home usually by a friend, relative, neighbour, community member or nanny. Ontario Works will support your decision to use Informal Child Care as long as it is the best suitable care for your child and provides a safe and healthy environment.
Things To Remember: Contact each home or centre by phone, followed by a visit, before making a final decision. Be clear about what you and your child want and need. Consider the following when choosing your child care:
Ask for references and check them. The care giver’s references should support your needs. Once you have made a decision confirm the arrangements with the care provider. It is important that you continue to monitor the situation to ensure the quality of care.
